The enemy wants nothing better than to silence us when bad stuff happens. He wants you to think you’re alone and that everyone else is never again to be trusted.

For example, you’ve grown up in a church, from baby to teen, having been spiritually fed, encouraged, and challenged. This is an excellent thing to be poured into in this way. We need shepherds to guide us and turn us so once we are older, we continue to walk in the Way.

Then it’s time to leave the physical place of your youth, where spiritual development was rich, to experience life in new ways, around new people. At college, you are surrounded by new opportunities that can enliven and enrich your career. You meet other like-minded people, some with whom you develop a deep bond. These are good things that have been added to your spiritual journey.

You carry all that you learned in your youth and now learn even more. You develop stronger convictions about things you perhaps didn’t learn in your youth. You continue to stride in your relationship with God, and that is good. We should always stride and never strive.

Then you come back home to share some things only to be pushed aside. The very people who taught you as a pre-teen and teen, the very people who encouraged you in the Lord so greatly, don’t seem to get you now. So, they push you aside by telling you that you are struggling. You think, “But I am the same person. I haven’t stopped loving God. I’m simply asking you questions. I come to you because I trust you. And, when I tell you that I’m simply worshiping in another part of the Body, I’m struggling?!”

With the sadness of heart, you realize that the very people you loved so dearly, are shallow, closed-minded, and are lacking some basic understanding in theological truths.

As much as you try to keep it to yourself when you look deep at the heart’s root, you see that you have allowed a handful of those you once trusted to say of all people, “I no longer trust anyone.” So you stuff the experience and walk around with a wounded heart. Now it is hard to even ask questions about anything, not just stuff of spiritual value. You are afraid you will get pushed aside again. 

Oh, how many opportunities are lost because you are now afraid to open your mouth! Or, how much money wrongly spent. Or, another area of critical growth not learned because you allowed the push of a few people to turn you against all people! 

But I get it, I really do.  You are wounded. Wounds bring us to our knees in pain. We close the door (of our heart), we want to be alone. We hurt.  I get it.

Here’s the thing though…

Wounds expose Satan to an open door. This door was opened when you chose to not deal with the pain. He enters in and begins to lie to you. Oh, how he loves this type of wound! He gets in there easier and easier as the weeks turn to months, and then you become almost apathetic about people who call themselves Christians! And then you begin to walk around with a spirit of pride attached to you. This spirit also came through that door you left open because you were afraid to deal with the wound of your hurt.

All because people failed you!  Because those once close to you, especially, hurt you.

But know this: Those few people who hurt you are not all people. Don’t buy into Satan’s lies. Every Christian is not the same. Just because they hurt you don’t turn your back on the whole. More importantly, God has not, and will never forsake you. He is not like those men who hurt you!

It is so important that you receive healing. Let’s close the wound:

  1. Open your mouth
  2. Speak the name of what or who hurt you. Write it down if you have trouble speaking it, but you must speak it aloud eventually. There is something powerful when you speak out loud to the enemy. Chains are broken and walls fall down. Renounce the hold of Satan you!
  3. Forgive (remember that God is the lawyer who will work all things out and for your good)
  4. Declare God’s word over it (there is a scripture for everything you go through)
  5. Seek counseling of someone who understands biblical healing, if needed
  6. Seek someone trained in healing and deliverance to pray and lay hands over you
  7. Find 2 or 3 trusted people with whom you can share from your heart

The devil will flee his oppression on you when you open up and speak out and forgive. There is power in having two or three gathered in His name. Plus, iron sharpens. Encouragement brings healing and it is a stone’s throw away. Sometimes you have to pick up the stone, though. 

But what if you can’t?  I speak to the rest of us…

Those of us who sense, see, feel, and receive impressions (this is all from the Holy Spirit) about something or about a person, must speak up. Go to the place or the person your heart beats for. If you do nothing, shame on you! You who sit back and ignore the impression, that knowing, you take part in another’s continued torment or eventual death by doing nothing. To you, I say, “Wake up! Stop sitting, and stand!!!”  Our hands, feet, eyes, ears, and nose, are meant to be used in healing and delivering one who is hurting or at the brink of death!

You who are wounded right now, know that you are not alone. My heart hears your cry and I am praying for you. Know that the Lord is right there with arms outstretched. Simply walk into them to be enveloped by His love. Your wounds are simply a distraction to get your eyes off the One who wants to make you whole. People hurt people because they don’t know better, they haven’t been properly trained, or they operate in sheer ignorance, and yes, even those in the church.  This is where we need to do better at being empathetic when we see someone operating from a place that causes us to question their judgment or their words over us. Yes, again, even church folk!  Remember a tree is judged and known by its fruit. 

So, weep and wail no more, Wounded One. Know the strength you walk in. Know Whose you are, despite what the naysayers told you with their words and more importantly through their actions toward you. Know that you carry something special within you and there are those who don’t understand – may never understand – what you carry. Your job is to move on from that place and listen to the Voice of Truth. Continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of the One who went before you.  And in the words of Paul, I pray over you, “… that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him,” Ephesians 1:17.
